2013 saw artists showing off daring and outrageous fashions on the red carpet, stage and in their music videos. From Kanye West in a straightjacket, to Madonna flashing her derriere, check out our picks for the 10 most shocking looks of 2013.
10 Most Shocking Looks of 2013
Raw and raunchy, Miley’s performance at the 2013 MTV VMAs left us scratching our heads. As she performed her hit summer single, “We Can’t Stop” the singer stripped to a nude latex bikini, danced with bears, twerked on Robin Thicke during his “Blurred Lines” and stuck her tongue out for a joy ride. Not to mention the foam finger. This number will certainly not be forgotten quickly.
Ke$ha tricked us at the 2013 Billboard Awards held in Las Vegas earlier this spring. The singer led us to believe she opted for a conservative little black dress. However, the Givenchy ‘fit featured a nearly bare bottom that put her butt on full display when she turned to the side.
Madonna outshined other gala-goers as she posed on the red carpet at the 2013 Met Gala in New York. Arriving late, the Queen of pop hit the scene in a custom Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci bottom-less ensemble complete with shredded fishnet stockings, a black and grey tartan jacket embellished with metal studs. She topped off her proactive punk look with a blunt black bob wig with bangs.
Lady Gaga flaunted giant rotten teeth at the YouTube Music Awards in NYC. The “Do What U Want” singer hit the red carpet wearing a leather button-up shirt, no pants and a wide-brim black fedora. Sky-high platforms, black round sunglasses and a horrifying gill made of angular yellow teeth completed her jarring look.
While performing on stage at Le Zénith in Paris, Kanye West sported a straitjacket and white feather mask. The all-white ensemble, complements of Givenchy, was complete with skinny jeans, an oversized T-shirt skirt, a tied-back straitjacket and a feathered mask. Later, West removed the mask and propped it onto a stick center stage, as if the performance couldn’t get stranger.
Iggy Azalea had an X-rated “Angelina” moment on the red carpet at the 2013 MTV EMAs. The Aussie rapper worked a Dilek Hanif Spring 2011 Couture black gown complete with a one-shoulder strap, slashed openings at the waist and two mega high slits that ended somewhere around her waist. While we admire her provocative attitude, this dress is far too raunchy for the red carpet.
Z LaLa made a wacky war fashion statement at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards. The pop singer appeared to have stepped out of a space ship sorting alien couture blended with a quirky Smurf edge.
J-Lo rocked one of the most iconic Grammys dresses of all time. Who could forget that plunging green Versace gown from 2000? The singer may have made another huge statement at this year’s award show. Lopez hit the carpet showing some major leg in an Anthony Vaccarello black dress paired with killer gold heels. We’re not sure if we’re more shocked by her leg flashing style, or the fact that Lopez looks better now than she did over 10 years ago.
Perry hit the stage in a full kimono gear and traditional lacquered hair as she performed “Unconditionally” during the 2013 American Music Awards. The singer received major backlash for this geisha look. Perry was called out as racist for sexualizing a traditional Japanese female figure. The performance received so much attention, Lady Gaga opened up to defend Perry: “Maybe it's because 'Unconditionally' means you're supposed to love no matter what geishas are paid?" Gaga joked in an interview with Carson Daly on Los Angeles' AMP Radio. She added, "I think people are generally too sensitive and they should just leave her be, but you know, I'm not really the person to ask."
