Madonna in Ile a Vache with Haiti Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin and Rocco
Singer Madonna is on a visit to Haiti this week, at the invitation of Haiti Goodwill Ambassador and Actor Sean Penn. (Penn and Madonna were previously married in the early 1980s.)
The trip has included stops to areas being managed by Penn’s J/P HRO relief organization and the solar-powered Mirebalais Teaching Hospital managed by Partners in Health.
On Tuesday, she accompanied Penn and Haiti Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin on a visit to the island of Ile a Vache, where government has placed much of its hopes for future tourism development.
The singer was joined on the trip by her son, Rocco.
Penn said they arrived a “couple of days” ago, and he wasn’t sure when she would leave.
“She’s here, she’s seeing, she’s made the effort to come here, and I’m thrilled by that,” Penn said, adding that he hoped Haiti might inspire her to seek out a cause in the country. “She has a unique platform, and wherever she chooses to bring that to, it’s very well.”
